Each of the past 5 racing seasons Top End has kicked off the year with the Top End Euro-American Handcycle Championship. The race was a partnership with the long standing Melbourne Marathon. The 26.2 miles was typical for Florida racing. Bridges were the launch pad for attacks that usually laid the foundation for long breakaways. A unique starting time was implemented to accommodate both runners and handcycles on the race course. That’s all about to change. Paul Schulte, Top End’s Head Engineer and point person for the revitalized race stated “It’s about offering a platform for great athletes to show case their talents”. “It was time to move on”. “We simply out grew what the marathon could offer”. “With greater control over race proceedings we are able to host an event that has cycling roots”. A road race, criterium and time trial are on the burner for 2016. Top View event management is contracted to run the races. They are a top flight company that manages most of Florida’s biggest events including the Pensacola Cycling Classic. Details are still being ironed out and will be communicated as information becomes available.
In essence this is a new race and a new race deserves a new name. From this point forward it will be called the Top End Euro-American Handcycle Championship hosted by “Race of the West” and will be held February 6th -7th 2016. It’s an excellent event to launch the 2016 Hand Bike Circuit. The following weekend is “Valley of the Sun Stage Race”. Top End’s Paul Schultz pictured at right.
