Top End American – Euro Handcycle Championship Results
Take everything you know about Florida and throw it out the window. The weather certainly was unexpected for most of the 84 handcyclist that participated. Racers from 6 different countries faced a full gamut of conditions. Wind, rain and cold temps. A last minute decision by race promotors to reduce the road race by 12 miles was met with mixed emotions by participants. Race officials felt the course would have been too difficult to cope with. The criterium was also reduced by 10minutes due to delays caused by windy conditions.
Canadians ruled the weekend with high results from newcomers Joey Desjardins and Alex Hyndman. Charles Moreau won 2 of his 3 races in H3 and Rico Morneau had his bike at the front also. The team was at the end of a weeklong training camp and well prepared for the event.
Notable American performances were by Alfredo Delos Santos, Ryan Pinney, David Randall, Will Groulx and Alicia Dana.
Tim De Vries demonstrated why he is one of the best in the world. You simply don’t travel from the Netherlands to ride for 2nd place. Jenette Jansen also of the Netherlands had a good weekend of racing. She had no difficulty competing with the men. Narce Ludovic of France is becoming a common name found always on top when racing in the U.S. This weekend was no different. He and Charles Moreau spent the weekend challenging for the #1 spot.
Racing in February is certainly considered training for those with summer Para-Olympic goals. If results from this race are a precursor for events to follow Charles Moreau will be the one to watch.
